The Studio is a cozy, intimate, black box theatre. It offers 110 seats to the general public. In the Studio students have the opportunity to experiment with edgier and more contemporary material. The Studio Theatre was renovated in 2011.
Ph.D Series productions are directed by doctoral candidates, feature small casts and are performed and designed by WSU undergraduate students.
Student Stage productions are directed by undergraduate candidates looking to earn their directing chops.
The Louise Heck-Rabi playwriting competition is also held in the Studio Theatre. Once the plays have been chosen via readings early in the Fall semester, full length productions are granted to the winners for the Spring.

THE LOUISE HECK-RABI ONE ACT FESTIVAL
The Louise Heck-Rabi Dramatic Writing Competition is sponsored by the Louise Heck-Rabi Endowed Dramatic Writing Fund. Playwrights submit new works in late May for judging. In the fall of each year, playwrights work with guest directors of staged reading of their works. The competition ends with a full production in The Studio Theatre of the selected plays in the spring. Selected Plays: Hurts So Good, written by Carollette Phillips and Edmund Alyn Jones, is a story about two people who are bonded to each other through a shared love and past. It is about self-sacrifice, lingering hopes, and the kind of regrets that always leaves one asking “What if?” Hurts So Good is a drama that explores the struggle called love in the context of modern complications. A New Play by Neil Simon, written by Dave Toomey, chronicles Lou, a theatre veteran and director, and his best friend Sandy who decide to put on a new play by renowned playwright Neil Simon. The play investigates demonic repossession and, during rehearsals, becomes too real as disembodied voices and shadows haunt the theatre. Chiseled, written by Laura Heikkinen, is a piece that questions where “we” went wrong utilizing the snapshots of our memories. In Chiseled, the actors live and reflect in and out of the realistic world, and the confines of what we “think” happened in our minds to find the answers. |
