For nearly fifty years the Studio Theatre, downstairs at the Hilberry, has presented great theatre featuring Wayne State University undergraduate students. With generous support by WSU Theatres’ patrons and donors, the Studio Theatre is undergoing a massive renovation. To accommodate the construction schedule, a unique partnership has been forged by the Department of Theatre and The Maggie Allesee Department of Dance. The Studio Theatre will open its new season with a production of Getting Out by Marsha Norman in the Maggie Allesee Studio Theatre on the third floor of Wayne State University’s Old Main building at 480 W. Hancock St., Suite 3317. Performances will be at 8 p.m. on October 21-23 and October 28-30, 2010.
Getting Out tells the story of a young woman who was recently paroled after serving an eight- year prison sentence for robbery, kidnapping and murder. Written for the Actor’s Theatre of Louisville, it was Norman’s first published and produced play. Norman later went on to New York City, winning the Pulitzer Prize for her play ‘night Mother.
Director Michael Butterworth, a second-year PhD candidate, describes the play as “realistic, with unrealistic components.” The main character is played by two actresses, one portraying Arlene, a woman recently released from prison, and the other portraying Arlie, Arlene’s past self. “Ultimately the play presents the question, ‘Can we make peace with the past, especially when the past haunts us every day?’” said Butterworth.
The cast includes Laura Heikkinen as Arlene, Ashley Shamoon as Arlie, Wendy Paquette as Mother, Robert Hammond as Carl, Joe Hamid as Bennie, Jacqueline Fenton as the Warden, Indigo Colbert as Ruby, John Denyer as Caldwell, Stuart Sturton as Evans/Ronnie, and Therese White as the Doctor/Principal.
The production team includes Madeline Greenwalt as costume designer, Cheryl Churchill as assistant costume designer, Biz Greenwald as scenic designer, Gabriel Rice as lighting designer, Troy Bohling as sound designer, Alan Devlin as properties master, Jordan Tumer as production stage manager and Richard L. Fosbrink as publicity manager.
Getting Out plays at the Maggie Allesee Studio Theatre October 21-23 and October 28-30, 2010. The Maggie Allesee Studio Theatre is located on the third floor of Old Main (rear), with an entrance at 480 W. Hancock St., Suite 3317, Detroit, MI 48202.
