Announcing the 2011-2012 Bonstelle Season

The Bonstelle Theatre, Detroit’s premier undergraduate theatre, has announced its 61st season. This ambitious season will challenge its actors and designers while captivating audiences. The Bonstelle has been a leading entertainment venue in Detroit for generations, offering seasons mixed with drama, comedy and, of course, musicals.

Noises Off, by Michael Frayn, will be the season opener on the Bonstelle stage and is one of the most inspired farces ever written. This folly presents a manic menagerie of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop. Out-of-control egos, memory loss and passionate affairs turn every performance into a high-risk adventure. Progressing from flubbed lines and missed cues in rehearsal to mounting friction between cast members in the final performance, Noises Off is a comic triumph of slamming doors, falling trousers and flying sardines. Noises Off will run October 14 – 23, 2011.

The 61st season continues with one of William Shakespeare’s greatest comedies, Twelfth Night. A shipwreck separates twins, but tragedy quickly turns to comedy when they wash up in a land turned upside-down by love. With raucous antics, ravishing language and rich characters, Shakespeare creates a bittersweet tale of laughter and longing, jealousy and triumph, not to mention mistaken identity, cross-dressing, fights, duels, and three marriages! Twelfth Night will play December 2 – 11, 2011.

Next is In the Red and Brown Water by Tarell Alvin McCraney. As a girl, Oya must choose between her dream of being a star athlete and caring for her mother. As a woman, she’s torn between the man she lives with and the man she can’t live without. This fusion of contemporary African-American culture and elements from Yoruba mythology is an inspiring story about how our choices make us who we are. In the Red and Brown Water will play February 10 – 19, 2012.

Closing the season will be the heartwarming musical, Hairspray, by Mark O’Donnell, Thomas Meehan, Scott Wittman and Mark Shaiman. Pleasantly plump teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire – to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show – and she does! Triumphant Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star, but she must use her newfound power to vanquish the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin and integrate a TV network – all without denting her ‘do! Hairspray will run April 13 – April 22, 2012.
