The 62nd Bonstelle Theatre season begins with Arthur Miller’s American Classic, The Crucible. A spurned mistress accuses her ex-lovers’ wife of witchcraft, and soon, no one knows whose name will be called next. The Crucible culminates in the trial of John Proctor, who must choose between indicting his innocent friends, or telling the truth and hanging for it. From supernatural suspicions to intense seductions, The Crucible is a gripping drama about a community stirred into madness.
For the winter holidays, The Bonstelle presents Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen adapted by Tyler J. Monroe. When a young boy named Kai is taken away by a wicked enchantress, his best friend Gerda must embark on a perilous journey to the North Pole to rescue him. Using puppets, music and supernatural magic, this exuberant, heart-warming production is an intense theatrical journey to the magical kingdom of the wicked Snow Queen’s icy palace, where the imagination is unleashed and anything can happen!
Third in the season is Mustapha Matura’s charming, ironic and very funny Playboy of the West Indies. When a handsome stranger appears in tropical Trinidad, claiming to have killed his oppressive father, he enchants the isolated villagers and seduces the hearts of the women. He is a true playboy until his father appears and reveals his son to be a liar and a braggart. The villagers turn on the young man as quickly as they embraced him.
The Bonstelle season concludes with the award-winning Bat Boy: The Musical by Keythe Farley, Brian Flemming and Laurence O’Keefe. A romp based on a trash supermarket tabloid series, this raucous musical comedy follows a supernatural half boy/half bat creature that is discovered in a cave. He naively tries to fit into a town of the narrow minded, and romantic sparks fly as he decides to run away with his enchanting love. But happiness is shattered as the town hears the shocking story of Bat Boy’s unholy origin.
